PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As I reported at the Annual Brunch in January, 2024 was a good year for Unit 106. We continue to be financially solvent, thanks to both increased turnout at sectionals as well as revenue generated by the I/N games. Overall trends in membership were better than, or consistent with, both the district and the ACBL. Our current active membership increased 3.8% compared to 2023. It should be noted that this gain was due in large part to the increase in new members, highlighting the importance of our recruitment efforts and the work of the members of the I/N committee.

This newsletter includes an interesting bridge hand, submitted by Mark Whitman. Anyone who would like to submit hands that feature bidding, defense and/or play of the hand are invited to send them to me for future newsletters. We are also highlighting one of the clubs in our Unit - the NewBridgers club in Nyack, NY. I am hoping that other clubs will be featured in future newsletters. There is also a remembrance of Glenda Caulkins, a former Unit 106 and District 3 president who passed away recently.

There are two important Unit events this Spring - the April sectional and the Johnke Swiss Teams in May. Flyers for both are included in this newsletter. If you haven't done so already, please start making plans to play in one or both events. Please note that, starting in 2026, the Johnke and Reitman Teams games will be renamed the Spring and Fall Swiss Teams games, respectively.

We will continue to promote the use of the Unit 106 website for updated information on tournaments, club events, lessons as well as other Unit activities. We will also be exploring various ACBL initiatives directed toward recruiting new members. Some of these initiatives are described on the Newer Members page.

Here's to Spring!

Best regards,

Carole
